Warm welcome for Cuban envoy

February 2004

EXECUTIVE Mayor Advocate Lentswe Mokgatle recently hosted Cuba's ambassador to South Africa Esther Amenteros to a special luncheon at Magaliesburg with a view to establishing links between the city and Cuba.

These efforts will culminate in a delegation from Mogale visiting Cuba in December.

Advocate Mokgatle, in his role as patron of the Mogale Foundation, said in his welcome address that it was important that South Africans understood that Cuba had implemented best policies in education and in the arts and entertainment.

Ms Amenteros, who was accompanied by a delegation from her office, received a warm reception from city officials and representatives from the business community, including Total, McDonald's, the State Information Technology Agency, Absa, Recreation Africa Group, Silverstar Group and Avianto.

The visit to Magalisburg was the first time Ms Amenteros had travelled outside Tshwane. "It was much appreciated and I love your city," she said.

Ms Amenteros worked in Nambia before taking up her current post in South Africa.

It is hoped that Mogale City and the Cuban Embassy relationship will bear long-term results for residents of both the city and the country.
