Hekpoort

Hekpoort is situated on the southern slopes of the Magaliesberg Mountain, a few minutes' drive from Hartebeespoort Dam. The area is accessible from the south via a pass ("hek" means gate in Afrikaans) through the Daspoortrand.

According to Vincent Garruthers in his book The Magaliesberg, Gert Kruger, brother of president Paul Kruger, was appointed commandant of the districts of Moorivier and Magaliesberg in the 1800s. He established the farm, Hekpoort, on land that belonged to Chief Mogale wa Mogale, in the Moot Valley around 1845.

Barton's Folly
During the Boer War, British attempts to clear the valley and foothills below the range were reinforced by the establishment of fortified outposts. One at the foot of the Hekpoort pass is still intact today and is preserved as national monument. Built in 1901 under the direction of Lieutenant-General Baron, it was nicknamed "Barton's Folly".
