Speech by the Executive Mayor Advocate Lentswe Mokgatle at the 10 Years of Freedom celebrations at Coronation Park
Mr. Edwin Molahlehi We are delighted to have you at Mogale City to celebrate with us 10 Years of Freedom. We are blessed to be alive today to witness the inauguration of our president in the presence of all our friends locally and abroad. We have had peaceful, free and fair elections. South Africa is setting an example politically, economically and socially. We are going through a reconciliation and transformation period that sometimes is painful. However, we have got to go through this phase to build a firm foundation for our nation and city. We at Mogale City are committed to building good relations between the races. We want to build a non-racial and non-sexist society. The gift we can give to our children and young people is to build a city where we should value individuals on the basis of the content of their character and not the colour of their skin. Today, I am proud to be South African. I am also proud to be a citizen of Mogale City. We are amazing people. A people that triumphs over difficulties. A people alive with possibilities. As citizens of South Africa, we want to wish President Thabo Mbeki all of the best in the next five years leading government. He has the support of all of us to do well in fighting poverty and creating work for thousands and millions of our people. We have definitely entered into a contract and an agreement with our people to change their lives for the better. We are part of the government machinery, which shall positively advance service delivery. Today is the final day of our 10 Years of Freedom in Mogale City. We have had a Film Festival, which was presented by Mogale Foundation and the municipality. In all our township screenings, the halls were filled to capacity and some of the viewers were sent back home. The film festival was the first for Mogale City and the first to be hosted by a local municipality jointly with the Film Resource Unit and Ster Kinekor. Our people are hungry for stories that are told from a South African perspective. At Mogale City, we shall be sensitive to the cultural development of our people and if need be we shall be a platform to facilitate cultural expression I am excited about the next decade of democracy. We are waiting for 2010. By 2014, we will be a winning nation and city. We shall be a matured nation and a city then. There is nothing that shall stop us.
Happy 10 Years of Freedom South Africa. I thank you.
