Speech by the Executive Mayor on the occasion of councillors receiving certificates for attending training on infrastructure and sustainable cities.
Councillors We thank Rand Water for providing training for our councillors to understand the water sector and also providing them with an opportunity to be better informed about service delivery in the infrastructure sector. I also want to commend councilors for setting aside time for this training. It is crucial that our capacity is strengthened so that we can lead infrastructure development programmes. We should continually expose ourselves to new thinking pertaining to our work as councillors. Training is one of the best ways to explore new thinking and finding solutions to problems of delivery. The service delivery mandate is in our hands and we are better placed to direct municipalities to find technical solutions in the areas that challenge us. Furthermore, we need to access funding for further training. We also need to be in the forefront of building our local economy. When we have a local economy that is robust and attractive then our people will be economically active. We need to engage our colleagues in business to build a growing economy that creates jobs. As councillors, we should also look for strategic partners that can help in the delivery of services to our citizens. Those strategic partners are in the private sector. I am encouraged to see so many of councillors receiving certificates today. We can only build our capacity through training and exposing ourselves to innovative and creative thinking. Congratulations for your achievement. I thank you.
