Local Municipality on the occasion of a gala dinner in honour of Ace Ntsoelengoe Wednesday 8 October 2003
Mr. Irvin Khoza It is my pleasure to welcome you to Mogale City, the city that hosts the Cradle of Humankind. We are gathered here tonight to honour one of our great sons of the soil Mr. Patrick "Ace" Ntsoelengoe. I am inviting you to join the Mayors of the West Rand to honour this outstanding soccer legend. Ntsoelengoe is a citizen of Mogale City and we are proud to have him amongst our midst. Tonight, we celebrate Ntsoelengoe's life. He will be inducted in the United States National Soccer Hall of Fame for his achievements in the world of soccer. When you visit the Soccer Hall of Fame website, the motto of the organization reads, where soccer legends lives. Now, Ntsoelengoe will be listed amongst the legends of this great game. He will be a legend now and forever. At Mogale City Local Municipality, we have been inspired by Ntsoelengoe's induction. The induction of Ntsoelengoe has reminded us of the great sons and daughters who have made wonderful contributions into our society but forgotten. When we heard about Ntsoelengoe's imminent induction, we decided he was a perfect icon to inspire our youth. Youth in this district have been competing against each other in a competition called the Ace Ntsoelengoe Hall of Fame Knock-Out Challenge. The pick team from the West Rand competed with the Under 13 & U17 of Kaizer Chiefs. This was a remarkable spectacle of soccer - where young people honoured Ntsoelengoe. I want to thank Ntsoelengoe for giving off his time to be available at the games. I want to thank the Ace Ntsoelengoe Co-ordination team for working making the tournaments take place. The Ace Ntsoelengoe Co-ordination Committee consisted of private sector members, officials from the West Rand Local Municipalities. It is imperative that we scout and search for talent at the grassroots in sports so that we can have future legends. I am happy to announce that Ntsoelengoe is a member of the Mogale City Mayoral Trust. I have assigned him to look at sports development. Ntsoelengoe is a passionate development specialist and I am looking forward to working together with him. It is heartening to honour Ntsoelengoe because he is a humble person that does not blow his own trumpet. What you see is what you get with Ace. He is a gentle person with no pretensions. Tonight we celebrate Ace as a family man, a husband and a father. We celebrate the gift that God gave us. Ace is an embodiment of nobility; hence he will be a great Ambassador of the West Rand with regards to sports. This does not mean that other people are not important. Their turn will come. The induction of Ace Ntsoelengoe has prompted us to rollout a campaign at Mogale City to honour outstanding leaders and achievers. We are honouring Ace tonight so that young people can seen that if a person works hard and is dedicated in a chosen field of expertise that there is always a reward and dreams can come true. Ladies and Gentlemen, we are happy that you have joined us to celebrate the achievements of Ace Ntsoelengoe. We thank you for your presence here tonight. This is a special way of sending-off Ace as he prepares to leave for the US. It is crucial in South Africa that we take pride in our athletes, sports stars and soccer stars because they bring pride to a nation like ours. It is actually nice to have Ace as a symbol of excellence in sports and soccer specifically. Thank you Ace for being an inspiration of sports excellence to us at Mogale City and the West Rand. We appreciate the fact that you gave off- your time to get us to plan the sports development programme. I hope that private companies represented here can participate in the sports development programme. We say halala to you Ace! I thank you.
