Speech by the Executive Mayor Advocate Lentswe Mokgatle at the Disabiblity Sports Event
FRIDAY, 26 MARCH 2004. BOB VAN REENEN STADIUM
Programme Director The main objective of today's event is to begin the process of developing and extending sport activities for disabled people in both mainstream and special activities so that they can participate in sport for both recreational and competitive purposes. This year, we are celebrating 10 Years of Freedom and Democracy in South Africa and in Mogale City. In Mogale City, we can proudly walk because disabled people are part and parcel of the move towards creating a better life for all. The Mogale City Integrated Disability Strategy calls for the integration of issues of disability in all sectors of our community. We call upon all community based organizations and individuals, who are involved in sports development to embrace this approach. Our sports facilities must cater for all in terms of the universal access approach to service delivery. Access means to ensure that the non- disabled members of our community begin to recognize disabled persons as capable and productive members of the community, who can contribute and participate much to community development in all sectors including sports and recreation. We hope that events such as this one will create awareness to both disabled people themselves on the one hand and the non-disabled persons on the other hand. Our disabled people should be motivated to take part in mainstream sports as administrators, referees, coaches, or even players if they are not going to be disadvantaged by their impairments. Enjoy the games. Thank you.
