Ladies and Gentlemen

We are gathered here in Mogale City to mark the 10 Years of Freedom and Democracy. South Africa is celebrating the achievement of ten years of democratic system and rule.

That is the reason why at Mogale City, we are also celebrating 10 Years of Freedom and Democracy in style. Tonight is the opening of the International Film Festival here at Key West.

This Film festival is the first of its kind hosted by a local municipality. Mogale City is proud to be associated with Ster Kinekor, Film Resource Unit to celebrate our democracy by featuring an array of films that depict South Africa's history and change.

I am happy that our residents in the rural and township areas have also had an opportunity to watch powerful films as part of this festival. Already there were screenings in Kagiso, Magaliesburg and now a screening in Munsieville.

The films that have been screened in Kagiso, Magaliesburg and Munsieville are The Foreigner directed by Zola Maseko, Portrait of a young man drowning directed by Teboho Mahlatsi and Fools directed by Ramadan Sulieman.

I am actually looking forward to watching some of the films that have been scheduled in this festival. We are truly becoming a South African nation dealing with a diverse nature of issues.

When reading about the films featured in this festival, it became clear that new issues have arisen for narration and dramatisation.

Mogale City is keen to be the platform for creative filmmakers to explore significant local content to tell the South African story. The South African story is a story about overcoming pain and suffering.

Programme Director, it has been announced that MultiChoice Africa Foundation, the Department of Labour and the National Film and Video Foundation have joined forces to give budding filmmakers the opportunity to potentially launch a career in filmmaking. It is such partnerships that we should encourage and give our young people an opportunity to embrace film making as an important career choice.

We should produce more filmmakers, creative directors and producers amongst our young people. Ster Kinekor can be a strategic partner to build a cadre of young people that shall explore film making as a career.

With these few words, I want to encourage everyone to make time and watch films like Black Sushi, Byale, Children of the Revolution, Christmas with Granny and Mix.

Programme Director, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to Mogale City. This is a city where you can come visit, invest and live.

Enjoy the Film Festival and we are looking forward to the next 10 Years of Freedom.

I thank you.
