Speech on the occasion of the launching of the Empowerment Room
Venue: Magaliesburg Police Station
Gauteng Provincial Government Premier
Community Representative
General Manager of SAB
Provincial Police Commissioner Reverend Molefe
Programme Director And Ladies and Gentlemen I am delighted to welcome you to Mogale City particularly at this important launch of the Victim Empowerment Room here at Magaliesburg Police Station. The security of victims of crimes is of paramount importance in the development of our democracy. South Africa is a democratic state that is dealing with the challenges of crime. Therefore the protection of victims will offer us an opportunity to be sensitive and caring to our people. We are happy that the Department of Safety and Liaison have chosen Mogale City to launch the Victim Empowerment Room. Our public safety department will provide full support to this innovation. I believe that this is an innovation to sharpen the responsiveness of our justice system. The safety of our people is a priority to have thriving communities and families. The protection of women is even a fundamental priority in building a gender sensitive society that respects women. Mogale City Local Municipality wants to create an environment that is safe, secure and crime free. It is through partnerships like this that we can achieve this. This goal can be achieved by forging partnerships with the community, business and provincial government. It is fitting that we are launching the Victim Empowerment Room in the month dedicated to women. Women not by choice are victims of domestic violence, which is a subtler criminal act that has for years silenced the voice of women. Women can now come forward and report cases of domestic violence without any fear. We congratulate the Department of Safety and Liaison for providing support to victims and survivors of domestic violence. The Victim Empowerment Room would also prevent victimisation of vulnerable groups in our farming communities. These vulnerable groups are children and the elderly, who are in the care of breadwinners, who in most cases are women. With those thoughts, I welcome everybody to Mogale City. I thank you.
