Speech by Executive Mayor at the National Masters Baseball Tournament at Bob van Reenen Stadium Monday 13 October 2003
Members of the Provincial Unions I am pleased to welcome all the teams competing in the National Masters Baseball Tournament in Mogale City. Welcome to this beautiful city and hope that you will have a successful tournament. As you compete against each other, please make time to see the city and visit the Cradle of Humankind. This would be a visit you would not regret. Mogale City is the ideal city where athletes can be trained because of its high altitude. It is an honour for us to host the National Baseball Tournament in Mogale City. We should not forget that sport could be a catalyst to unite our society. I urge all sporting bodies to work hard to scout for talent in our society. This would mean that more and more people would be exposed to different sporting codes.
We commend Krugersdorp High Old Students Association, which is also known as KHOSA Sports Club for hosting this tournament.
Organisations like KHOSA have a challenge of breaking barriers in sporting codes by promoting these sporting codes at grassroots level within Mogale City. We need to regain our identity by becoming a sporting city with rising stars in all sporting codes representing all races and creeds.
I am aware also that baseball has grown in leaps and bounds since it was introduced as one of the four sports played at KHOSA Sports Club. Mogale City Local Municipality is committed to working with sporting stakeholders or organisations that want to develop our youth. The future belongs to the youth. They have an opportunity to become sports stars in all sporting codes, if we give them a chance. With those words, may I say Welcome and enjoy Mogale City's hospitality. Enjoy the tournament.
