Speech by the Executive Mayor Advocate Lentswe Mokgatle Reporting Back about the progress made in the provision of education in the past decade Friday 19 March 2004 Magaliesburg Community Centre
Gauteng Premier Programme Director, it is gratifying that we have accomplished amazing results in education in a short space of time and that is the reason why we can celebrate 10 Years of Freedom and Democracy in education. The ravages of Bantu Education have been defeated. Our public schools in rural areas can also be recognized for their outstanding achievements. We can now celebrate a truly integrated educational system. We are gathered to celebrate:
We have achieved all these because we have worked together with parents, teachers and the community in achieving our freedom and democracy. I am confident that a solid foundation has been laid for a brighter future for our children and youth. As a nation we are now closer to achieving one of our constitutional provision that everyone has the right to a basic education including adult basic education. Government and Non-Governmental organizations can fulfill this obligation. Our challenge in the next decade is for our children and youth to value and appreciate the rich cultural, artistic and spiritual heritage of our city and nation. With these few words, I welcome you to Mogale City - a desirable place to visit, live and invest. We at Mogale City want to make our city a human rights city. It is no doubt that it is through education that we can get closer to making Mogale City a human rights city. I thank you.
