Ladies and Gentlemen

We are priviledged to witness the 10th Anniversary of Democracy in South Africa and want to say that young people are better positioned to grab opportunities that are available to make a mark in leadership, business and community development.

South Africa is entering its second decade of democratic dispensation, which is a milestone for any country in Africa. We are a beacon of hope for Africa and the world.

We will be celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Democracy in South Africa and Mogale City because government has provided housing for the poor, social security grants for the pensioners and have opened up opportunities for the youth.

At Mogale City together with the Executive Committee of the Youth, we have planned an Elections Youth Rave taking place on Friday 26 March at Market Hall and Youth Bash taking place on Saturday 27 March 2004 at Coronation Park. We want to celebrate the 10th Anniversary Celebration of Democracy and encourage our young people to vote.

I believe that it is our responsibility as the Mogale City youth leadership to fight unemployment and poverty in our communities. A foundation has been laid in the past 10 years but now we need to build firmly in the next decade.

When we vote this year, please remember that we will be implementing the Vision 2014, which is a blueprint for building South Africa and Mogale City in the next decade. The Vision 2014 says that unemployment must be reduced by half (from 40% to 20%) through new jobs, skills development, assistance to small businesses, and opening up opportunities for self-employed and sustainable community livelihoods.

In practical terms, this means that 1 million job opportunities will be created through expanded Public Works programme. Youth agencies like the Umsombovu Youth Fund will be assisted to provide skills training for employment and self-employment. The National Youth Service will be fully implemented to provide young people with valuable information about agencies and organizations that are involved in youth development.

I am optimistic about South Africa and I urge you to be passionate and patriotic about our nation because we have achieved a lot considering our challenges. Let us strengthen our democracy over the next ten years. This we can do by ensuring that our vote counts. Register now to be in a position to exercise your democracy.

I wish you a successful workshop and remember to register to vote at your municipal electoral offices (next to Mogale City Museum).

I thank you.
