Mayor visits upgraded hospital children's ward
17 November 2005 By Clifford Mogotsi Wide smiles greeted Mogale City Executive Mayor Lentswe Mokgatle as he took time out of his schedule recently to drop in on children at Leratong Hospital. While there he also checked on the newly improved facilities of the children's ward. The walls of the playroom have been painted and new play equipment has been provided. Accompanied by spokesperson Bongani Gaeje, the mayor first met the hospital's management before heading to the children's ward. The improvements were thanks to help from South African Breweries (SAB). According to the hospital's deputy director of administration, Grey Dube, the children's ward had lacked play facilities. "We didn't have enough toys for the kids and the playground was just not conducive for play." Complaints of poor service had put the hospital in the spotlight, before improvements were made. Mokgatle was impressed with the new couches, tables and chairs, as well as the variety of toys available in the playroom. A lawn has been laid in the playground, which is sprinkled with various multicolored equipment including swings, slides and a small wooden bridge. It even has a braai stand. Nurses are on hand to keep an eagle eye on their young charges. The fence around the playground has also been repainted. Dube, Leratong Hospital board member Simon Molefe, chief executive Barbara Wojtowicz and deputy director of nursing Margaret Khosa accompanied Mokgatle on his tour of the facilities. Mokgatle applauded the Leratong team and thanked SAB. "This section looks beautiful with the facilities. Congratulation on a job well done," he said. Leratong is a regional level two hospital with a capacity of 980 beds. It offers a complete range of out patient and allied services, from surgical and dental to physiotherapy and speech therapy. The tour ended with the Leratong choir singing and dancing with a delighted Mokgatle.
