MOGALE City is the cleanest in the province, walking away with the top prize in the provincial Bontle ke Botho competition.

The City and wards in the municipality received a total of R315 000 in prize money, while schools won R45 000 in total. The annual cleaning and greening Bontle ke Botho campaign seeks to promote the message that municipalities, schools and communities can create beautiful environments for people to live in and in so doing create a better quality of life for all.

Bontle ke Botho means "Being beautiful is human". The City was named Best Performing Municipality in the province and was given a trophy and a cheque of R200 000.

Snowy Mothiba, the director of the integrated environmental management unit, was delighted with the winners and the entire municipality for bringing the top provincial award home.

"These prizes mean that all is well and shows that there is committed leadership and team work among my personnel and community members in terms of taking forward projects that are geared towards cleaning and greening our environment," Mothiba said.

"These awards will serve as an income generating platform for our municipality in creating more jobs in Bontle ke Botho-related projects, and may bring more income from international donors.

"For those who think that the mining sectors within our vicinity are closed, I would like to emphasis that we are well ahead in a reclaiming process of mining products. The projects that we are engaged in will, in no distant future, create jobs for our people."

Wards 14, 18, and 31 received R25 000 each as the Best Performing Wards in the municipality. A third prize of R25 000 was won by Ward 12 for the Best Performing Ward in the province.

The cherry on top came when Ward 12 was again called to the podium to collect another R15 000 for the Most Sustainable Project at ward level. The ward's councillor, Kelebogi "Thoti" Mojaki, was filled with joy.

"These prizes mean that our municipality is well on track on issues of environment. The prize money and certificate is an added bonus for my ward committee and ward members, whose relentless efforts have resulted in these prizes," Mojaki said, indicating that the money would be spent wisely on projects that would create employment in the ward.

The Gauteng MEC for agriculture, conservation and environment, Khabisi Mosunkutu, who is the driving force behind the campaign, said the money should be used for projects related to the categories that the wards and schools entered.

"We are happy for all the participants and wish then well in their future endeavors. However, we want to indicate that these monies are not meant for festive parties, but for the intended projects," Mosunkutu said.

"We also want to instill within our communities through the Bontle ke Botho campaign the roles that this competition plays in our cities' by-laws, so that the principles of our initiatives are realisable. The local industries produce toxic wastes in our rivers, dams and wetlands, thus rendering our ecosystem useless, and this has to stop abruptly."

Four schools from Mogale City also scooped top prizes in various categories, to the tune of R45 000. Thuthuzekani and Patrick Mashigo schools from Kagiso Extension 12 and Reitvallie Two and Three respectively were awarded R10 000 each.

Thuthuzekani won Best Performing School on Sustainable Waste Management while Patrick Mashigo took the accolade for Most Sustainable Agricultural Project. Mphe-Thuto school from Magaliesburg also won R10 000, while Zwartkop Primary School, near Muldersdrift, pocketed R15 000 for Most Sustainable Project in Schools.

The Bontle ke Botho competition is a result of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development. It seeks to promote ecological awareness and activism among local communities and school learners.
