Bontle ke Botho
launched in Mogale

13 June 2006

By Thabang Mokoka

MOGALE City played host to the launch of the 2006 annual cleaning and greening competition, Bontle ke Botho, which encourages municipalities, wards and schools to care for their environment.

Bontle ke Botho was officially launched on Thursday, 8 June by the MEC for agriculture, conservation and environment, Khabisi Mosunkutu, and Mogale City's mayor Koketso Calvin Seerane.

The provincial leg of the national competition sees a total of R3.2-million on offer to the various winners.

Residents of Mogale City and surrounding areas turned out to listen to the opening addresses by Mosunkutu and Seerane.

The competition, now in its fourth year, was launched to coincide with National Environment Week. It aims to encourage local communities to play a role in beautifying their environment. "This campaign will encourage our communities to have [a sense of] ownership and belonging," said Seerane, emphasising that communities had to think of the generations to come.

Bontle ke Botho means being beautiful is being human, and is aimed at "improving the quality of life for all", Mosunkutu said. "As a nation, we must eliminate and reduce pollution in our environment."

The campaign operates on three levels: local governments, wards and schools. Winners in each category in Gauteng are judged on the public awareness they raise around the issue of keeping their environments clean and green.

The Bontle ke Botho campaign was born out of the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg in 2002.

Mogale City has won in the category of best municipality three times. Its success, said Mosunkutu, is based on its mission to promote a sustainable environment through:
  • Promoting environmental awareness;
  • Preserving the heritage and cultural sites;
  • Promoting and maintaining parks, fauna and flora;
  • Effectively managing waste pollution;
  • Developing relevant legislation and regulations to protect the environment.

The criteria for judging the Bontle ke Botho competition include:
  • The Best Performing School Category takes into account the school's raising of awareness and practical efforts at improving the environment
  • The Best Performing Ward Category recognises the efforts made to management the environment and raise public awareness. It also looks at initiatives made to improving the environment
  • The Clean Municipality/Metro Category is based on the cleanliness of the entire municipality or metro. The winning municipality or metro will represent the province in the national cleaning and greening campaign.
