Mogale makes friends
with China's Wujiang

WITH its strong economy, dazzling technology and leading role in trade, the Chinese city of Wujiang will have a lot to contribute to the relationship it has formed with Mogale City.

Executive Mayor Koketso Seerane hosted a delegation from the Wujiang municipal government, which included Mayor Xu Ming, interpreter Shen Bin, chief financial official Zhang Guosheng and Shen Zhigang, who deals with exchange programmes with sister cities.

A Memorandum of Friendship was signed between the two cities as a commitment to teaching each other about economic growth and education. They will also set up cultural exchange programmes.

The two mayors held a closed-door meeting at the Civic Centre where a discussion on how both cities could boost one another economically was held.

Although mining has been on the decline on the West Rand, Mogale City is generally still regarded as a treasure chest of the west. It boasts the world heritage site at the Cradle of Humankind, has an estimated population 600 000, and an abundance of industrial facilities for rent or for sale, which appeals to foreign investors.

The industrial areas are Boltonia, Chamdor, Delporton and Luipaardsvlei. A number of serviced erven and unserviced erven are available for potential investors in Chamdor Extension 2, Fariavalle and Muldersdrift.

Wujiang is traditionally known as the "Place of Fish and Rice" and the "Capital of Silk". It has a population of 1,2 million people and a burgeoning manufacturing and textile industry, with 800 foreign enterprises, a total investment capital amounting to $5-billion (about R36,4-billion) and more than $5-billion worth of international imports and exports.

Ming told Mogale's politicians and officials that their friendship would also play a role in improving the rand exchange with China.

"We are here on this historical occasion to establish a formal relationship between these two cities. We also invite upcoming business people in Africa, South Africa and Mogale City who wish to open businesses in Wujiang," said Ming during a special council session where the signing of the Memorandum of Friendship took place.

"We can work together to realise our common objectives, and as the government we also need to work together speedily to make sure that all these things we discussed happen," Seerane said, adding that he hoped to visit Wujiang in the near future to lure foreign investment to Mogale.

Seerane then accompanied the visitors on a tour of Maropeng.
