Mogale City's Executive Mayor the Honourable Cllr Koketso Calvin Seerane's Christmas Message
12 December 2007
AS God's only son, Jesus Christ came to earth and gave His life so that we may live. His deeds and spoken words must guide us in ensuring that we always know that service to others is central to our lives and that sacrifice and unconditional love must guide us to lead lives of compassion, love, peace, reconciliation, nation-building and justice. It is with this spirit that I send greetings to all the people of Mogale City. At this time of the year, I send greetings particularly to those celebrating Christmas. During Christmas, we congregate with family and friends to celebrate the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. The central message of Jesus is one that all the people of Mogale City can embrace this holiday season. This message is about loving one another. This Christmas we particularly remember those without the means to fully enjoy the spirit of the season because they have to worry about where their next meal will come from. The true spirit of Christmas reflects a dedication to helping those in need, to giving hope to those in despair and to spreading peace and understanding throughout our beautiful city. Over and above it being our constitutional duty, it is also on this basis that the municipality conceived a Humanitarian Programme. This programme seeks to bring hope, love, a deep sense of community and a message of prosperity for and among the people of our city. This programme concerns itself with the things that will help brighten the season for those in need. It involves a bursary scheme for matriculants that do well in their exams and are from poor households, although not exclusively. It involves taking some senior citizens on a holiday to the Mother City - Cape Town, most of which were on an airplane for the first time in their long lives. It involves fixing dilapidated houses of residents who do not have the means to do it themselves and many other things. This programme will be unveiled shortly. In the book of Luke, the Bible talks about an angel that came down from heaven to bring a message of good news and great joy to the Shepherds. It also says that this angel was accompanied by a choir of angels who sang songs of praise for God Almighty. And so like the angels, we hope to bring this message of hope through this programme so that more of us can celebrate the season in a fitting manner. We invite all residents to take time to think about such people. We also urge everyone to be safe throughout this season, particularly on our roads. I want to particularly pass this special message to those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, orphans, those trapped in a life of alcohol and drug abuse, including our youth - we want to say that you are not alone. We pray to the Almighty to bless you and enrich your lives. May God bless you, your families and your friends. The Mayoral Committee and all councilors, Senior Management and the entire staff of the municipality join me in wishing you a Blessed Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. May all our dreams come true. Thank you.
