Mayor swings for charity

18 October 2007

By Clifford Mogotsi

EXECUTIVE Mayor Koketso Calvin Seerane hosted 100 golfers, consisting of local, provincial and national government officials as well as business executives, at the annual Mayoral Golf Day.

Although he makes no claim to being a professional golfer, the mayor teed off at the Krugersdorp Golf Course on Friday, 12 October alongside his colleagues and business partners, all in the name of charity. While service delivery was foremost on Seerane's mind, the golf day was also used to promote Mogale City as a sought-after business and tourist destination.

Played over 18 holes, the day gave Seerane a platform to raise funds for various charities across Mogale City as part of his social responsibility programme. And it was a networking opportunity - in partnership with First National Bank (FNB), the City brought together current and potential suppliers and investors to spend the day getting to know the municipal personnel and one another.

Golf was secondary to fundraising and fun, seen in the humorous putts and swings of City manager Dan Matshitisho and Peter Kute of the council's inter-governmental relations unit, and the topping, slicing and hooking of many other players. However, the lack of skill on the green did not stop participants from networking in a more relaxed and friendly environment.

All the players finished their rounds about 5pm, before heading to the course's lapa for cocktails. A prize-giving gala dinner followed. Speaking at the dinner, Seerane joked about his golfing expertise, but added that next year's event would be bigger.

"We are proud to have hosted this event and have intensions of developing it into a much bigger and better event over the next few years, more so because we know that it is not just golfers we are hosting but important people from across the spectrum of life."

He used the occasion to speak about service delivery. "Looking at the myriad of challenges which confront us, there is but one logical conclusion that we can arrive at: the government alone has neither the wherewithal nor the capacity to deal with all of them. To reach the pinnacle of service delivery success, we must forge partnerships with all stakeholders who have the interest of our community at heart.

"Today we are bear testimony to one of the wonders worked by a partnership. We have been able to raise much-needed money, which will fund needy and deserving causes in our city."

The sports memorabilia shop, Golf Encounters, also hosted an auction to raise funds for charity. Among the items sold were portraits of sporting greats like Tiger Woods and George Best, as well as football team shirts and flags.

FNB's client portfolio executive, Mzwandile Nyoka, said that the partnership showed that the bank was part of the community.

Although the primary aim of the Mayoral Golf Day was not competition, several participants won prizes for their efforts.
