Parties warned to remove election posters
30 April 2009 By Rudo Mungoshi POLITICAL parties have three days left to remove their election posters, put up on trees, street poles and buildings across Mogale City in the run up to the national elections, which were held on 22 April. According to Victor Monnakgotla, the City’s chief superintendent of public safety, there is a large number of posters that have to be removed. And there are consequences for those parties that do not remove their posters. “Politicians who fail to take down their election posters after three days are eligible to be fined,” Monnakgotla says. In terms of the council’s by-laws, political parties have 10 days after an election to remove any campaign posters. “After the deadline has passed, the parties that have failed to remove posters will pay a fine of between R8 and R12 for each poster [left up].” The council will remove them and other structures after the 10 days. Areas targeted for the removal of the notices are trees, traffic lights and council assets. A letter stipulating the conditions for the display of posters was sent to the Independent Electoral Commission and all political parties contesting the elections.
