Kids learn about health, safety
05 March 2010 By Mmatshepo Dikgole and Keotshepile wa Mogotsi A MASSIVE jumping castle and welcoming ambiance in the grounds of the Burgershoop Community Centre brought smiles to jubilant groups of underprivileged children of Mogale City. The youngsters’ cheerful spirit was heightened by the core business of the day, in which they learned about health and safety and got educational tips from government experts. Educational stalls were set up by several government departments, including West Rand emergency services, the Education and Health departments, and Mogale City public safety, which focused on the safety of children. The day, called the Integrated Early Childhood Development Imbizo, was organised by the Early Childhood Development Institution (ECDI), in conjunction with the Department of Education and Mogale City Local Municipality. Government units taking part used entertainment to show the young children safety measures. The key focus of the imbizo was to bring greater synergy and co-ordination to current government programmes, increase participation related to ECDI service provision and improve the overall quality of these services. In addition, it facilitated and supported ECDI service delivery in all related government structures, including municipalities, minimised duplication and provided a platform for efficient delivery of services and infrastructure. Hence, different government departments were on board to provide services encompassing the needs of the children, including good health, education, safety, love and care. Children came from as far away as Swanieville, Soul City and Sinqobile. Among the safety information were pedestrian road safety tips, prevention and care of burns, including not using household items such as butter, Brasso, Colgate, eggs, polish, oil and sand to treat burns. The children were also taught how to use the telephone to dial for help, whether calling the Flying Squad on 10111 or the emergency services on 10177. Social workers offered to help those crèches that needed to be registered, while the children were fascinated by the fire truck. Firefighters demonstrated their skills by setting on fire a heap of tyres and then swiftly extinguishing the blaze. According to Mogale City’s Dipuo Motlhoareng, the ECDI has embarked on round trips in various municipalities in the province to launch projects of this nature focusing on children’s health and safety. “The ECDI visited various municipalities to introduce the imbizo and we did not hesitate to snatch up the opportunity to introduce our children to this programme,” explained Motlhoareng. According to a statement provided by the ECDI, the provincial departments and municipality involved in early childhood development face numerous challenges, including conflicting legislation that widens the gaps in service delivery. They should support each other and work together for the sake the country’s children, it said.
